Guidance on Unit Selection

It is important to consider that there are many variables that might affect the cooling requirement of an area. Imagine two rooms of identical size; the first is south facing with 6 occupants, each of whom has a computer, the second is north facing with 2 occupants, again each having a computer. Whilst the room sizes are the same, the heat load would be significantly higher in the first room for obvious reasons, and therefore when applying the formula below, it should be remembered that this is for guidance purposes only.

1. Working in Feet, Multiply Length x Width x Height x 4 = BTU Requirement.
Example: A room 20 feet x 10 feet x 8 feet x 4 = 6,400 BTUs.
To convert to Kilowatts divide 6,400 by 3412 = 1.88.

2. Working in Metres, Multiply Length x Width x Height x 35 x 4 = BTUs Required
Example: A room 6m x 3m x 2.5m x 35 x 4 = 6,300 BTUs.
Again, divide by 3412 to convert to Kilowatts = 1.85
