Guidance on Unit Selection

In the first instance it is important to establish what size of heater is required. To assist you with this we have provided a simple formula below, although it is important to remember that this is for guidance only. We will of course be delighted to help should you require further assistance.

To establish your BTU requirement you first need to have an idea of the cubic capacity of the structure to be heated.

1. If you are working in feet, multiply the Length x Width x Average Height.
For example, a building 80 feet long x 30 feet wide x 20 feet high would have a capacity of 48,000 cubic feet.

2. Multiply the cubic capacity by 5 for an insulated structure, or 7 for an uninsulated structure.
For example, an insulated structure with a capacity of 48,000 cubic feet would require 240,000 BTUs, i.e. 48,000 x 5.

3. If your dimensions are in metres, once again multiply the Length x Width x Average Height, but multiply the end result by 35 before again multiplying by 5 or 7.

4. To convert BTUs to Kilowatts divide by 3412.
For example, our structure requiring 240,000 BTUs would equate to approximately 70kw.
